Updates from UChicago

Hello Everyone!

Our first major event of the year, Dia de los Muertos, was a great success. We had lots of delicious food, music, crafts and a performance by the dance group Folklorico. Many student groups and organizations also displayed their own altars, commemorating an important issue.

In November, we also partnered with USAS (United Students Against Sweatshops) in hosting their Midwest Fight Back! Organizer Bootcamp in an effort to empower students from campuses all across the Midwest to learn about and build organizing skills.

Nov. 2nd Celebration: Dia De Los Muertos

Hello everyone,

Here is an upcoming event put together by yours truly: M.E.Ch.A. de UIUC. We will be having mini booths or rotations with activities that will demonstrate the traditions that take place during Dia De Los Muertos. Here's a break down of our activities:

Face Painting
People can get their whole face (or part of it) painted like a calavera.

Photo Session
Once people have gotten their faces painted, they can have their photograph taken with their friends and a large paper mache Catrina.

Screen Printing
Print a shirt with the option of two designs related to this celebration. Participants are asked to BYOS. (Bring Your Own Shirt--or anything else you would like to get screen printed)

Papel Picado
Participants can create papel picado using templates.

And, we will be serving free Mexican food.

SB 590

Que Onda Tierra Mid-Atl!

Here is a little update on what we have been up to recently. We are going to hand out little information sheets (below) at different events we are planning in order to make others more aware of what is going on with the whole SB 590 issue. We are working on holding an education night, setting up giant cardboard silhouettes with info around campus, and wearing t-shirts and signs around campus that say things such as, "ILLEGAL" and " DO I LOOK ILLEGAL?". Hope you all find this helpful!

Thanks,
MEChA de ND

Los Condenados Huastecos, Show in Chicago

Whattup Folks!
We wanted to share information about this really great experience in Chicago next Friday.
Especially the UIUC and Whitney Young folks, ya'll should come check it out!
Thanks,

MEChA de ND

Notre Dame visiting professor Alex Chavez and his Son Huasteca group will be performing Feb 25th in Chicago. The event is at Galería Colibrí, an art space in Pilsen. All ages are welcome and there is a $5 donation/cover to support the space. Afterwards, there will be a fandango at the space with local Chicago musicians who play son jarocho and other styles of Mexican folk music. Those who play instruments should bring them to join in the music.

Thank you all!

For not only making it a great regional meeting but also for coming to our campus and being a part of such a wonderful experience! We loved having you all here and are getting excited for Nationals!!

Thanks again to all ya'll who came down!

Also, big thanks to Dakota for designing the blog page, it looks "filthy" (as folks would say in Seattle! Dakota assures me its a good thing...)
